CCADV Statement Regarding Ansonia Domestic Violence Murder Suicide
Friday, September 13, 2024
Glastonbury, CT – The following statement is issued by Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) chief executive officer, Meghan Scanlon:
“The senseless murder of Miguelina Lebron by her ex-husband in Ansonia marks the second time in one week in Connecticut that a victim of domestic violence has had her life taken away by her abuser. For so many victims, the abuse continues long after the relationship has ended, in this case leaving three children, two of whom were in the home at the time of the murder suicide, without a parent.
Domestic violence is a preventable public health crisis that is impacting all of our communities. At its core, domestic violence is about control and coercion. Abusive tactics can be subtle but may escalate over time, becoming more physically violent. Often the behaviors that precede homicide are jealousy, control, and stalking. Everyone has the right to live a life free from abuse and we all have a responsibility to prevent and end this kind of violence in our communities by learning the warning signs, holding those around us accountable, and raising awareness about the free domestic violence services available in each community.
We urge anyone who is questioning their own relationship or that of a family member or friend to speak with an advocate. Safe, free, and confidential services are available across the state at CCADV’s 18 member organizations and accessible 24/7 through Safe Connect, Connecticut’s domestic violence information and resource line. You can call or text (888) 774-2900 or visit www.CTSafeConnect.org to chat or email with an advocate. No one has to navigate their safety alone.”
